What are your addictions? And how do they pertain to a Healthy lifestyle?
We all seem to have one or more these days, and none of them are healthy!
Some people have an addiction to exercise, and while we might think that’s not a bad thing, these people can be doing real damage to their body and minds.
An addiction can be explained as a condition in which a person engages in the use of a substance or behaviour for which they feel the rewarding effects provide them a compelling incentive to repeatedly pursue the behaviour despite detrimental consequences.

We are going to focus on Food addictions in this post.
It’s a proven fact that one of the biggest addictions we have in North America is to sugar. Our obesity rates, diabetes, and pretty much all of the other “itis’s” reflect the damage that this has caused.
Processed foods have a very powerful effect on our brains, it has been said that our reward centers react in the same way that a cocaine addict’s brain reacts when they get their hit. That is pretty powerful!
Have you ever tried to eliminate sugar from your diet? It’s a very hard thing to do! Most processed foods contain sugar. Not only the obvious chocolate bars and candy, but processed meats, canned or jarred spaghetti sauce and anything else that is processed in any way.
We’ve talked about sugar before, we have given you all the names that these companies use to disguise it.
If you want to go sugar free the best thing you can consume is anything that DOESN’T have a label! That’s right, and where do you find these items? Why in the fresh food isles in the form of fruits, vegetables and unprocessed meats and eggs.
Some people’s food addiction comes from an unresolved, untreated mental health condition. It is a way for them to feel better, it is the “drug” of choice for them. Depression is a common one.
I for one hate that there is still such a stigma put on anyone with any kind of mental health diagnosis, and I believe that more people would step forward and get treatment if they didn’t feel that stigma that still exists. If you are diabetic, you take insulin, if you suffer from seizures you take anti-seizure meds, if you have cancer you take chemotherapy or radiation and NO ONE bats an eye. But say you suffer from depression and everyone has an opinion and lots aren’t positive or supportive. Watch for another post on mental health coming soon.
Challenge yourself to going sugar free for 30 days. You may feel the symptoms of withdrawal for the first few days, and yes, they are a bit uncomfortable, but the rewards you will benefit from are so worth it! You will have more energy, you will not have the food cravings for all the junk food, your skin will be clearer, your mind will be clearer, you may find you have more money even, and chances are you will drop a few pounds!
