A lot of people who are just starting out on their weight loss journey feel that they will have to spend hours each day going to the gym and working out. This is not always the truth, while exercise is extremely important, especially for your heart health and has been proven to have major effects on people’s mental health it is not the major factor in weight loss. About 80% of your weight loss will come from your diet.
Am I saying that you shouldn’t get some exercise? No, of course not. Exercise is a great addition to a more nutritional lower caloric diet. I myself work out with weights at home 3 to 4 times a week, walk for at least half an hour daily, and try to go on a 5 to 10-mile hike weekly.
The biggest trick to adding exercise in is to find something that you enjoy and can stick to for a long time. Whether it be walking, yoga, weights, biking or even a martial arts class it will be beneficial to your weight loss and physical/mental well-being. Just ensure that you don’t fall into the trap of I just worked out for an hour, I deserve a treat for all that work that I did. Yes, feed your body, it needs good nutritional food after you work out. For example, running for an hour is great, but only burns between 600 to 700 calories and if you go and get a smoothie and a granola bar after your workout then you have put back in as many calories as you have burned off, try just having some water, nuts and seeds and a piece of fruit, it will fill you up just as much.
Joining a Gym
Gyms love the new year, it’s when all those people who have made that big new year’s resolution to lose weight join one. Only about 10% of people who join a gym in the new year end up using it for the full year, in fact most drop out within the first month. Gyms love this because they are still getting your monthly fee if you have committed to a yearly membership.
Getting a personal trainer
Personal trainers are great, I myself am on my way to becoming a certified personal trainer. If you are first starting out at a gym it is my opinion to get a trainer for a few sessions so that you can get yourself a workout routine made for you and learn how to use the machines and how to do exercises properly so that you don’t injure yourself. Trainers can be expensive though and unless you have lots of extra money to spend or just find that you really need someone to push and motivate you then you would really be better off in the beginning to spend those dollars on a nutrition specialist who can help you set up a meal plan that will help reach your weight loss or healthier lifestyle goals. Lately we have been working with a nutrition specialist to help some close friends and clients to reach their goals. In the future, we will be offering this online because there is no one size fits all plan, everyone has different likes and dislikes when it comes to food and may not have the access to all the food sources that are on a certain plan. You are much better off to get a meal plan that is structured to you and your lifestyle, one that you will be able to stick to for the long haul.
