Throughout my renewed journey back into a minimalist lifestyle I have been able to get some motivation by watching a enormous amount of documentaries. Here is a list of the ones that I have personally found that have given me insights to make the world around me and my own life better.
Most of these documentaries can be found on Netflix, except for the second and third one, which can be found on Tubi TV, which is a free service to watch older movies and shows.
1. Minimalism: A Documentary About The Important Things
This documentary on Netflix shows how and why the minimalists Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus changed their lives from working in Corporate America to having a simpler life with less stress, less bills and less stuff. The documentary evolves around the 2 minimalists travelling across america promoting their new book while giving insights into their lives and others who promote this type of lifestyle. A must see for anyone, not just those trying to lead a minimalistic lifestyle.
2. Bag It
Bag it which can be found on Tubi TV currently is a great documentary that will make you think twice about how much plastic is used in the world today and how much damage it has done to our environment. After watching this documentary I now always take my own bags to the grocery store and will never use bottled water again. Even if this documentary was only half truths it is still appalling how we have changed the earth just from the use of plastic. If this documentary doesn't change the way you see plastic then nothing will.
3. Pioneer Quest
Pioneer Quest is a Canadian Made Docuseries that takes two couples and returns them to the life of pioneers in the 1870's. Shot on location in Manitoba, Canada it takes two couples away from modern life and conveniences for one year to show how difficult that life was before the advancement of technology. A must see in my opinion, you can find it on Tubi TV under the reality tv heading.
Happy is another documentary that asks the questions What makes us Happy? Is it money? Lifestyle? or just a different way of looking at things? For myself i found this a very uplifting documentary that made me take a look at how I view life and the world around me. My favourite place that is a must for me to go to is Bhutan, also known as the happiest place on earth. Another must see in my opinion which can be found on Netflix.
5. Hungry For Change
Hungry for change is a documentary which takes a look at how what we put into our bodies as fuel on a daily basis can change the way we can feel both mentally and physically. As for myself I always thought I ate properly, but after watching this documentary I have made several changes to my diet and have seen the affects that these small changes can make to your life. This documentary can be seen on Netflix.
Some honourable mentions
Lately I have watched a couple of travel documentaries, The Kindness Diaries and The American Dream Project. Both are now available on Netflix. I found that it is nice to see that there are people in this world who are willing to give to others and not want anything in return. Think it is one thing that is really missing in our lives today, the want and need to interact with other people, just like we did before the mass introduction of technology.
If you think there are other great documentaries out there that I or others should watch then please leave a comment. I may have to do a second blog on Inspiring Documentaries.
