Travelling is a tough one for most people, but as a minimalist I have learned to adapt and now carry much less when I go on a trip.
Find clothing that is multi purpose:
For myself it's a pair of cargo pants that unzip into a pair of shorts as well as a reversible jacket that is both warm and waterproof. My wife brings clothing that she is able to mix and match for many different occasions.
Learn to roll your clothing, it takes up much less space. If bringing extra shoes, tuck your socks inside them to save space.

Buy smaller carry on luggage:
I usually only bring a small carry on suitcase and my backpack for trips 3 days or less, and a larger carry on suitcase and my backpack for longer trips. I can usually put my backpack which includes my camera and Ipad under the seat on an airplane, easy access so if I want to read or need a snack. The best part of packing this way is that when I depart the plane I don't have to worry about wasting time waiting on my luggage.
Learn to pack what you need, even with what I packed for three days I will probably not use it all. Don't forget about the clothes that you are wearing when you head on your trip, wear things that you can possibly use on other days.
