One of the biggest problems that people run into is gifts. If you are into the minimalist lifestyle or are just trying to declutter your home it can cause all kinds of issues. what do you do with all of these things? How do you just say no without hurting someones feelings?
What do you do with all those family heirlooms that seem to keep coming your way. For myself I have always refused them, I have the memories and thats all I need. When my parents passed a few years back (miss them very much) all the siblings decided to just take a few items that really meant something to us and sell or donate the rest. For myself I just took a couple of pictures of when my parents were young and an old cuckoo clock that my parents bought in Germany in the 1950's when they were stationed over there. The clock will always bring back memories of the family around the dining room table having supper.
There were thousands of pictures when we went through our family home, we ended up scanning them all in and putting them onto Dropbox so that we all had access to them whenever we want. The rest of the items in the home no one really wanted. I will say that I will never put my children through what we went through trying to clear that house out. There were items that had been stored for nearly 35 years, never opened, never used and now just to old to be of any use.
The other problem that we have run into is presents at birthdays and other giving events. What we have gone to now is giving an experience instead of a gift. A gift can last for a while but an experience will last for a lifetime. For christmas we took the whole family out for an evening at a dinner theatre, we all had such a great time and want to do it every year. For birthdays now we give our children concert tickets, they so much more enjoy that. In the past 2 years I have gotten several concert tickets and even got to go sky diving, something I will remember forever.
By all means keep photos and items that bring back memories for you, just limit them to certain special items and give the rest to people who can use them or cherish them. Ourselves we had thousands of photos that we had taken over the years, we kept the ones that were really important to us, then made up photo albums for each of the children that they could keep.
I know this is a hard subject for some people, it can really be hard to let go of the past sometimes.
